Unique Features, Attractions & History

  • The name “Caiguna” likely comes from a word in the Mirning language (an Aboriginal group) meaning “spear track” (possibly referring to the speargrass found in the area).
  • Caiguna hosts hole number 11 to the “Nullarbor Links which is known to be one of the longest golf courses in the world as it runs from Kalgoorlie WA to Ceduna SA – stretching over 1,300km.
  • “90 Mile Straight:” One of the most famous stretches of straight road in Australia is between Balladonia and Caiguna. It’s about 146.6 km long with practically no bends.
  • Caiguna Blowhole: About 5 km west of the roadhouse (and only ~10 m off the highway), there’s a blowhole in the limestone. It “breathes” — meaning as weather systems move overhead, the pressure difference between the underground cave and above ground makes air flow in and out of the blowhole. The underground void has clearance heights of about 0.5-1.5 m.
