History / Sightseeing:

  • Madura Pass & Lookout: Just a couple of kilometres west of the roadhouse, there’s a lookout with sweeping views over the Roe Plains. For travellers who have been driving across flat expanses, the rise and drop at the escarpment (the Pass) can feel dramatic.
  • Small Natural Blowholes nearby: If you’re willing to take a short detour, you can see some small blowholes opposite the roadhouse — not huge, but an interesting natural curiosity.
  • Mullamullang Caves: About 28 km northwest of Madura are vast caves, said to be among the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Some speleologists spend considerable time exploring them.
  • Madura Station: The land surrounding Madura is part of a large sheep station, formerly used for camels, cattle, and horse breeding. Sheep wool is a major local industry.
  • Madura Shelf: Beneath the area lies the “Madura Shelf” — a large sedimentary geological region (~265,600 km²) that forms part of the Bight Basin. It is of interest due to crude oil potential and geothermal gradients.
